Girl Fight in the Senate
Senator Barbara Boxer (D, CA) decided to attack Condoleezza Rice for being childless. On 11 Jan, 2007, Boxer decided to use family status as a reason why Rice cannot take part in management of the Iraq War.
This was a dominance encounter, fairly common in the course of human events. I have observed events like these staged via an innocuous question, “Are you married YET?” or “When are you going to have children?” I observed a bunch of stay at home mothers accusing working mothers of being greedy. None of the working mothers responded that they enjoyed their work and had no guilt in doing so.
I doubt though, if Senator Boxer has ever attempted to undermine a male general or admiral who does not have a family. If Boxer wanted to be honest about leaders and risk, she should have pointed to the Bush daughters.
Unless these two are would be draft dodgers, they could set a great example of filial support and patriotism by joining up. And, joining with real intent of answering their country’s call. Would President Bush be as eager to place his daughters in harm’s way as the other troops he commands?
Ms. Senator Boxer might have a fit about that, after all patriots do not expect American females to defend their rights to free speech, voting, etc. I would be surprised if Ms. Senator Boxer would support extending the draft to women.
But it’s not too late for the Bush daughters. They can still show their mettle and head off to Iraq with the troops.
So, Senator Boxer could revise her sexist ways and attack Bush for not placing his family in harm’s way. Plus, she could propose adding requiring all females to register for the draft. This would have the side effect of making many citizens less eager to have our country engage in wars of ignorance.
