Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt shows off his Coat of True Colors
Well, the scene of the Nativity myth that Green Bay City Council President Chad Fradette sneaked onto City Hall is spawning a myriad of bad behaviors. His midnight copilot Mayor Jim Schmitt has discovered that his pandering piety isn’t reaping the benefits expected.
First, Schmitt approved the blatantly religious artifact. When complaints formed, he (and Fradette) stated that anyone was welcome to place a religious display next to the manger scene. There were takers.
First up was a Wiccan Star. Several others planned on installing their displays today, Monday 17 December, 2007.
But, convenience walked with Schmitt and Fradette. Over the weekend, in an act of domestic terrorism, the Wiccan Star was torn from its place and damaged. Today, Schmitt dictated his new policy. There will be no other displays until 18 December, 2007.
That is when the City Council meets and presumably will law down the law on what is an acceptable display. He will not allow the Wiccan Star to be replaced. Now, isn’t that convenient? The others who arrived at City Hall in good faith were met with Schmitt’s true colors. He had no intent of backing up his offer.
In another act of the Chad and Jimmy comedy week, Schmitt denied the request to place a Festivus Tree in the display area. He claims it is not religious, which places Green Bay clearly in the business of promoting religion. Apparently, Schmitt considers a display of plastic dolls with European features and draped with electric lights to be an authentic and faithful display of the birth of Jesus rather than part of a pop culture.
Ironically, the Festivus tree would strengthen his case for keeping the creche.
The way things are going, the Fradette and Schmitt comedy team will end up costing Green Bay dearly in money, respect, and good will if they continue their shenanigans.
